As a Registered Dietitian, the question I get asked the most is “Should I avoid carbs?”
Much to the joy of almost everyone - the answer is no! You do not have to avoid carbs. In fact, carbohydrates are an essential nutrient for the body. They are our cell's optimal fuel source and can contribute to a healthy diet, weight management, and even weight loss.
Carbohydrates have been villainized for years. This is not completely unjustified because there are a wide variety of highly processed carbohydrate foods on the market. Carbohydrates like baked goods, white pastas, and snack foods typically outshine the more nutrient dense choices of fruits, beans, lentils, whole grains, and starchy vegetables.
Let’s take a deeper dive into understanding carbohydrates. They can be bucketed into two general categories: refined and complex.

Complex carbohydrates contain additional nutrients of fiber, protein, and/or fat. These nutrients help slow down the digestion of the food and signal hormones in our body. This contributes to better blood sugar regulation, increased satiety, and more sustained energy. Nutrition goals should be to reduce refined carbohydrates in the diet and integrate complex carbohydrates strategically throughout the day.
My advice is to work with a Registered Dietitian so that you can choose the right amount and types of complex carbohydrates for your nutritional needs. Carbs are important as they can:
